Hard-Learned tips for people to WIN in 20&30s.

Hard-Learned tips for people to WIN in 20&30s.

One day, my wife reminded me, "James, you're turning 35 this year." I was surprised because it felt like I was still in my 20s. Time flies, and my son is turning seven this year, which makes me realize I'm no longer a young man. However, I've learned some important lessons that I'd like to share with you, especially if you're in your 20s. Here are my thoughts on career, money, relationships, and personal growth.

Here is the video version for you as well.

Perfect Life and Work Balance is Impossible

While it's impossible to perfectly balance life and work, striving for balance is essential to avoid burnout. An imbalanced lifestyle can affect your health, relationships, and overall well-being. There was a period when I worked non-stop, running between meetings and clients every day. I made good money, but I also ended up with insomnia, anxiety, and health issues like vegetative system dysfunction. I would wake up automatically at 6:30 AM, check my calendar, and start going through emails, unable to go back to sleep. This constant stress was detrimental to my health.

To avoid burnout, here are a few suggestions:

  1. Set Boundaries and Time for Yourself and Family: Make time for exercise, as it helps reduce stress and boost endorphins and dopamine, making you feel happier.
  2. Prioritize Your Work: Focus on the important and urgent tasks, and leave everything else alone. This approach was a game-changer for me.

Save Your Money and Buy Real Estate

Buying a house acts as forced savings. I started working in real estate in 2013 and bought my first small apartment in 2015. However, I made the mistake of spending money on cars, motorcycles, and travel instead of continuing to invest in real estate. If I had kept saving and buying properties, my life would be significantly different now. I could have enough passive income to enjoy more family time or pursue other interests, like going back to school or learning new skills.

To choose the right place to buy properties:

  • Short-term: Look at policies like loan rates.
  • Mid-term: Check economic growth.
  • Long-term: Focus on population trends.

Start Your Career Plan Early

Whether you want to become a partner or start your own business, planning early is crucial. Working at a bottom or mid-level job is very insecure. Your goal should be to own a company or at least part of it.

Plan Your Life

Planning is essential for both study and work. I was the first among my friends to get Canadian permanent residency because I planned it from my freshman year. I researched the required documents and work experience, prepared my resume, and found internships that led to a smooth transition into a full-time job and immigration.

Don't Care About Others' Opinions

When you set a goal, don't worry too much about others' opinions, even those you care about. They might give you wrong advice. For example, my father thought I was foolish for quitting my corporate job to become a real estate agent in 2013, but it turned out to be the best decision for me. Seek advice from those who have gone through what you're planning.

Always Keep a Learner's Mindset

Never think you know it all. As I age, I meet more amazing people and read more books, making me realize how much I still need to improve. This mindset helps us grow stronger. The joy of learning is far greater than what material pleasures can offer.

Find Your Love

Finding unconditional love is one of the greatest benefits in life. Meeting my wife was a turning point for me. We've never had a single fight, and we support each other in all aspects of life. We read and grow together, discuss business plans, and make decisions as a team. This has made me incredibly happy. So, find your love.

Date Like You're Married and Be Married Like You're Dating

Date like you're married to assess compatibility in values, habits, financial views, and parenting ideas. Be married like you're dating to keep the romance alive with surprises, gifts, and dates. Effective communication and shared hobbies help maintain a lasting relationship.

Experience Life Early

Experience life as early as possible to realize what's important. Once you've tried different things, you may find they aren't as great as they seem. This helps you settle down and focus on what truly matters, like family and career.

Choose Friends Wisely

As an extrovert, I used to have many friends, but now I value quality over quantity. I look for friends who are trustworthy, hardworking, and lifelong learners. Avoid unreliable, dishonest, and selfish people, as they can be toxic and harmful.

These life lessons have greatly influenced my personal and professional growth. I hope they resonate with you and help guide you on your journey.
